How do you successfully transfer one of the most energetic live acts in London into a track less than three minutes long? Like this.
From the intro you could be forgiven for thinking the debut from London noise-makers RANT was an archived recording of Johnny Rotten singing over Primus. Perhaps its the dry wit of the lyrics, the bloodbath-at-the-circus guitar lines, or the raw, powerful delivery. Whatever it is, RANT lose none of their raw power on recording and manage to display an eclectic musicality that separates them from their punk piers. That’s just it, Backstage sounds punk at first listen and yet the indisputable grooviness of that rhythm section holds everything together, perfectly timed chaos stitching together the many layers of dissonance and aggression. Punk bands wondering if they can encapsulate all the energy of their live show in one single should take note.
