The tidal wave never falls, the storm never quiets, there is no calm to follow.
The new single from Bristol nu-metal outfit NO:IR opens with a divine facade, as tranquil as the surface of a lake, completely hiding the turmoil going on beneath. It is hard to associate these angelic vocals and delicate guitar tones with a band whose previous work has been described as having ‘An atmosphere of menace, pessimism, anxiety, and realism’, however it soon makes perfect sense when the turmoil comes bursting to the surface, as if an avalanche of boulders had come raining down and turned the peaceful waters into a raging tsunami.
The storm constantly folds inwards on itself, growing stronger with every beat, perfectly capturing that overwhelming sensation of when everything becomes to much, when it is impossible to cope any more.
Even as the waters calm the ripples carry on: constant; fragile; beautiful. But soon the rain must come again, and come again it does, this time with no sign of receding. This time the tidal wave never falls, the storm never quiets, there is no calm to follow.
