Pompousness, insecurity and masculinity swirl and spin like a whiskey whirlpool, stirred by the next in a long line of exceptional acts to come out of Dublin this last year.
By no accounts new to the scene, Thumper already have a European festival tour, a sold out UK tour and 3 singles under their belt by the time they come to release the droning post punk cacophony of Topher Grace. The new single comes as a departure from the band’s usual style of “Noise pop that sounds like it could fuel jet engines” (Paste Magazine) and takes a more minimalist approach, but one just as wild.
Rattling, repetitive instrumentation and stream of conscience lyrics gradually grow more frantic and absurd throughout all six and a half minutes of Topher Grace, harkening back to the days of house parties where one could end up in the corner with a stranger, rambling the night away. Lunging between hysterical peaks and melancholy valleys this track shows the narrators vulnerability one second before cloaking it in absurdism the next, leaving you talking to yourself in the mirror all weekend.
